More information about life in Lake County

Unique for its eco-cultural diversity, affordability, adjacency to wildness, Lake County is a rural county adjacent to Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, and Colusa counties.

  • Affordable: Lake County Fair Market Rent is less expensive than 75% of the state of California. A great place to start a family and own a home.

  • Richly diverse cultural landscape: Inhabited by Native Americans (Eastern Pomo, Southeastern Pomo, Lake Miwok, and Wappo People) since time immemorial, and several Tribes with thriving cultural presence are located around the perimeter of the lake.

  • Wildness and natural beauty: Mount Konocti’s ancient volcanic soils allow for a diverse array of flora and fauna, from old-growth oaks forests to manzanita chaparral, lakeshore marshes and high-altitude fir forests. Surrounded by mountain ranges, it’s a great place for outdoor enthusiasts.

The rural small-town environment of Lake County fosters a real sense of community and connection between its residents. There are several small towns scattered throughout the county, all distinct in their charm.

  • Ample opportunity to participate in local events and get to know your neighbors. Farmers markets, live music, and a variety of winemakers and local restaurants that highlight the quality produce cultivated in the region.

  • There are five school districts in Lake County, with several elementary and high schools located along the perimeter of the lake.

  • The bigger towns in the county where population is densest include Clear Lake, Lakeport, and Kelseyville, which is where you will find most major grocery and department stores, restaurants, and other businesses for various needs, as well as doctor and dentist offices. Towns are spread out around the lake and public transportation is very limited.

  • Folks often drive to Ukiah or Santa Rosa for larger shopping needs and access to more urban amenities. Larger city centers like Sacramento and the Bay Area are both within about 2/2.5 hours’ drive.

  • Along with the lower population density however, Lake County has a poverty rate of 15.9%, which is higher than the state and national averages. Median household income from 2016-2020 was about $49,000. See more census data.
